SEO 2.0, WordPress, And - Hey, I Like This Guy!
Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Friday, 3 of August , 2007 at 3:12 pm
I can’t pronounce the man’s name, but he’s Dutch. He’s an SEO guy who doesn’t like SEO guys. I like him already.
I found him on Lorelle. Well, not ON Lorelle, but Lorelle wrote about him and I found him. Next thing you know, I’m kissing him on the cheek. From thousands of miles away. How do you like that?
He published a list of 10 ways to succeed without SEO. Since I’m an SEO guy, that got my flitter fluttering. Needless to say, I was excited.
But if you go down the list you’ll find some interesting and useful tips. I’ll have to say, I agree with all of them. Here’s the list, just in case you’re wondering:
- Discover your niche (Is he related to Nietzche?)
- Use WordPress (I do - are we married yet?)
- Create a killer CSS design and submit it to CSS galleries (You mean, create my own template?)
- Allow trackbacks, use dofollow (Follow who?)
- Socialize, write comments and link other blogs (Like Paris Hilton and her girlfriend Nicole - hubba hubba)
- Include social media on your site, use social media yourself (mmmm de.licio.us)
- Write your own content, say something new, express yourself (I can’t, I’m shy)
- Compile what you know or what others said and publish it (That’s the idea)
- Contribute to your favorite online publications (Look, a byline!)
- Add new content at least every second day (Do it twice as fast - every day!)
That’s a doggone good list! So as this guy was killing me softly with his song, I was dancing a jig, cutting the rug, doing limbo with a glass of iced tea in the living room of my mind’s eye (weird, huh?). Yep, this guy clearly knows what the web is all about. And then it hit me. This stuff could put me out of business. So I did some further investigatin’.
He’s talking about Web 2.0. Uh, I mean SEO 2.0. And I found another list:
- Link bait done right is very SEO 2.0
- Reputation management is SEO 2.0
- Wordpress is SEO 2.0
- The long tail is
- Social media optimization
- Problogging
- Diversification of traffic sources
- Buzz or guerrilla marketing
- Producing multiple media (ebooks, audio, video etc.)
- Giving before receiving
- Great CSS design according to web standards
See? He’s no commie. Just a socialist - I mean, a social mediaist. Er, a social media optimizer. An SEO Whuru Guru. Like me. And what’s so cool is, I don’t even have to learn his name. Cool stuff comes in different colors. Like Crayons.

Dutch? He’s good old US American and he’s Greg Balanko-Dickson.
Oh, wait. You mean the Dutch man that Greg linked to from my blog, Tadeusz Szewczyk of GoogleBlogoscoped.
Greg is a guest blogger on Lorelle on WordPress and uncovered this fabulous treasure post. A great crayon. It’s right on, isn’t it!
Thanks.

Great post. Very funny stuff. Funny thing is it’s really all old school, retro seo, not new.
People give old things new names but all of this except digg and social bookmarking has been around a long time.
don’t need ‘dofollow” tags. if you don’t put “nofollow” in robots.txt then all links are followed and some search engines follow anyway ignoring the no follow tags.

I’ve managed a lot of webmaster forums over the years. The one thing I always found is that many people continually tweak their websites over and over again trying to optimize it for the search engines. They spend all their time re-editing the website according to the latest search engine tips.
The advice I’ve always given is, build the website with seo in mind as you build it. Install a blog, an article directory, or something that will allow you to add new content often.
Then spend all of your time promoting the website rather than constantly rebuilding it.
If you just have to keep building, build more websites instead of constantly rebuilding the same old website.
The list in the post is good because it recommends promoting your website a lot.
People spend 80% of their budget on web design to have a pretty site, then try to squeeze by with 20% of their money toward getting traffic.
A pretty website that makes no money may as well be an ugly website. However, an ugly website that makes money gets more beautiful by the dollar.

Michelle, that’s a common problem. SEO is good to learn, but the real SEO is content. Write your copy with your audience in mind. Do that and everything else will take care of itself - provided you stick to the list, of course. ![]()
