The Simple Truth About Keyword Research

Do all the keyword research you can, but don’t just settle for going to WordTracker and Overture and checking out which keywords are being searched for most often. There is more to keyword research than simple numbers. Here are some other keyword research strategies you can try:

  • Visit some competition websites and View Source, check out their meta tags
  • Use a keyword density tool to see what the keyword density is of the top keywords in your industry on your competition’s websites
  • Pick up a thesaurus and look for synonyms of your important keywords
  • Have Google AdWords generate a keyword list for you
  • When on your competitors’ websites, click through to to their advertisers and partners and examine their meta tags and keyword densities

Keyword research is more than just looking to see who is searching for what. Most of the popular keywords in every industry imaginable are saturated with competition over them, both in pay-per-click advertising bids and organic search. To truly conduct effective keyword research, you need to go beyond the obvious and get down in the weeds on which keywords are best for you. At the end of the day, what your competition is doing is not the important thing. Effective keyword research can lead you to an unfilled niche where you can outstrip your competition on few keywords and be more profitable than you ever imagined.

I recommend you check out HitTail as one of your sources of keyword research. Just Google on it. It’s at the center of a fairly large movement in online marketing these days.
