SEO Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be, Or Is It?

(Source) When you talk to an SEO consultant and he/she seems focused on specific little things on your site such as keyword density, meta tags, etc., move on. If he/she seems overly focused on inbound links, move on. If he/she is focused on implementing a strategy that makes people want to come to your site and stay there, you may have found one of the few SEO experts that know what they are talking about.

I found this little tidbit from Greg Howlett at Marketing Pilgrim quite interesting. While Mr. Howlett doesn’t tell us what an SEO consultant should focus on, he does give us a clue as to what not to focus on. Only, it seems that these are the things that most SEO consultants are focusing on these days.
Admittedly, meta tags are not as important as they used to be, keyword density is overemphasized, and the inbound links discussion is pretty much dead. I think we’ve reached a crossroads in SEO. These things that have been important the past few years are going to be less and less important. In that regard, Greg is right.
Still, I do believe there is reason to care about these three topics specifically even now. For instance, the wrong meta tags can kill you. If you don’t believe me, just put your wish list in the keywords meta tag of your website and see how well you do. You’ll likely not do well if you have superfluous meta tags where they don’t belong. The search engines do penalize websites that use meta tags in the wrong way.
Another thing is keyword density. If you’ve been reading this blog in the last few weeks then you know how I feel about keyword density. That’s not where SEO is at. But try to ignore it altogether and see where you get.
Then there’s links. Do you need them? You bet you do. But how many? What kind? Links are important. Article marketing proves it. If they’re good for anything they’re good at least for driving traffic and one good link on a highly trafficked website back to your site can bring you some good targeted traffic.
That said, real SEO has all but been killed by the outspoken hucksters who have sold small business owners a bill of goods regarding SEO practices. Much of what you hear is staid and boring. But that doesn’t mean you should discount SEO altogether.
