Limit Yourself On The Social Media Tools That You Use And You’ll Be Far More Productive

I’m reading one of my favorite blogs and find that someone I respect uses Twitter. So I’m thinking, What’s the point?
It’s not that I have anything personal against Twitter or anyone who uses it, but I hear so much buzz about it and I don’t see a huge value. It may be there, but I’m just not seeing it. I mean, if you’re going to blog then blog. If you’re just going write a couple of sentences about the sandwich you ate for lunch then I wonder what that is all about. But some folks swear by it.
If you use Twitter then more power to you. I realize that some tools are great for some folks but not so great for others. I can live with that. And my regular readers know that I’m a big advocate of social media and viral marketing. I hear that Twitter is somewhat good for that. Still, I feel obligated to point out that no one can use every tool out there. At some point, you have to stop and ask yourself which tools are the most effective and productive for your business.
Maybe it’s Twitter. Maybe it’s something else. I’m not one to judge. But I know this. I can’t use them all and you probably can’t either. If you try, you’ll likely not use any of them very well. I recommend that you pick two or three social tools and focus on them for awhile. If one or two bring more results than another then drop the one that isn’t performing and try another in it’s place. By test driving certain media tools to see which are most effective for you business, you’ll find that, over time, you are more effective and productive once you find the right tools for your business. Just as you wouldn’t try to be all things to all people, don’t try to master all social tools for your business. It just won’t work.
