How Much Should A Company Blog Writer Earn?

(Source) If you are going to pay a blogger $500-$1000/month, it had better not take very much time or that blog had better be a great way for said blogger to gain visibility and move onto a better gig. That’s what AOL Weblogs Inc. paid me for a whole lot of posts, but the blog was great for my career.

Blogging shouldn’t be about boosting the blogger’s career. It should be about providing a good and useful service to the company hiring the blogger. Marshall Kirkpatrick recommends companies pay bloggers somewhere in the neighborhood of $5K to $8K per month. In other words, that would be a paid full-time consultant. Might as well hire an in-house person to research and write your blog on a full-time basis if that is what you are going to do.

I suspect that Mr. Kirkpatrick is talking about corporate blogging. Most small businesses couldn’t afford $5 per month for a blogger. They’d be priced out of the market.

There has always been a huge range of income possibilities for freelancers. Some top copywriters make 6 figure incomes, but many more struggle to make ends meet. Some are good at marketing themselves and cant’ write worth a lick while others who can write the dictionary and make it sound like a fast-paced novel have a difficult time selling their services. Blogging is just another form of copywriting. But, then again, it’s more than copywriting. It’s also, at heart, SEO work.

You do want your company blogger to know something about gaining search engine rankings, right? Well, you should. And I know a few bloggers who know about that. They don’t make $5 per month. For more information visit my website today.
