39% Of Consumers Shop Off Line And Purchase On Line

You’ve likely heard that 67% of consumers search for a product online then drive to a local merchant to purchase it. What you don’t hear too often is that 39% of consumers look off line then go online to purchase. That’s startling news.
Search Marketing firm iProspect conducted the study that revealed this insight. Here’s a nugget from the firm’s press release:
The implication of this finding should be clear. Smart marketers have a huge opportunity to leverage offline channels to drive their audience to search for them or their products. Doing so could greatly enhance the effectiveness of their efforts.
“Think about it, said Murray, “Two-thirds of search users jump through hoops to perform those searches now. Imagine what that number would be if marketers actually made it easy for them.”
Are you a smart marketer?
I’m sure you are. But here’s the opportunity: Use your off line resources to drive traffic to your website. Bottom line, you have to make it easy for people to find your website. Here are some tips:
- Choose a domain name that is easy to remember (shorter is better than longer)
- If you are a well-known company in your area and you expect a lot of business locally then use your company name as your online brand
- You don’t have to use your company name as your online brand
- In fact, if you are a new start up or expect to do a lot of business outside your local area where you are not known well, then do some keyword research and develop a niche around a long tail keyword within your industry
- Put your website address on all of your marketing collateral
- Use billboards; people still read them
- Host a social event and invite the public (don’t leave out the local media) and give something away, give door prizes, create a lot of buzz, and make sure your website is prominent on everything associated with the event
Good marketing works both ways. You can use online sources to drive traffic to your local store or use your off line resources to drive traffic to your website. You should be doing both and in the future the businesses that survive will be those that do both well.
