(Source) If rumors weren’t abundant enough, they sure will be in the coming weeks. According to the latest published figures by online competitive intelligence service, Hitwise, Microsoft have lost 3 percent year on year [directly to Google] in US Search Market Share.

Is anyone even remotely surprised by this? MSN has been on the decline for a long time now. They’ve developed nothing new or significant in who knows how long. News that MSN could be purchasing Yahoo that came out earlier this year and the fact that MSN hasn’t reported link popularity numbers all year is evidence that the search engine is losing the little status that it has left. Google is constantly making new developments and improving.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see MSN lose more market share in the future to Yahoo and Ask. Both search engines continue to strive to be competitors and now that Jerry Yang has a more prominent position at Yahoo again, I think we’ll see better performance from them.
My prediction for 2008 is this: MSN will continue to fall, Ask will rise a little, Yahoo will stay steady, and Google will continue to lead. That may not be much of a prediction, but I do believe that MSN is on its last leg.
