Local search indeed presents some problems that general SEO doesn't address. Submitting to Google and Yahoo! Local is a must. Location of the business in their "about us" page must be exact. I've gone to using both the physical address plus longitude, latitude of the business (easy to find with gps). Reviews of the business if necessary aid in gaining top rankings in local search. These should not be ignored as a means to climb to the top of the local SERP heap.
