SEO Trademarker Should Call Himself Nefarious

Should any one person or group own the trademark to the phrase “SEO”? Well, some goober is trying to get one and a lot of us in the SEO community don’t like it. I think Jordan McCollum does a good job of explaining why we don’t need an SEO trademark, and we certainly don’t need one person controlling it. Jason What’shisface says that he is trying to establish one standard across the industry, but that likely won’t happen. What will more than likely happen if his application is approved is that he will spend the rest of his life in court trying to defend his trademark. And a lot of good Search Engine Optimization experts may end up shutting down their businesses so that they don’t have to content with permissions. Maybe that’s his plan any way.
I’ve seen several problems with his application. No. 1, Search Engine Optimization has been around a lot longer than he has. And Jordan is right again when she says that he will not be able to enforce standards across the industry. I’m not even sure that standards are necessary and, if so, they certainly shouldn’t be enforced by one guy. This clearly has “nefarious” written all over it.
