The Monkey Is Out Of The Bag: Will It Affect Your Search Engine Optimization Strategies?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Yahoo! have released their developer platform, SearchMonkey, to enable developers to begin building applications that enhance the usefulness and relevance of search results. Will search engine optimization consultants now have to work harder?

The potential to providers users with a lot more information in their search results will be appealing to a lot of web owners. The question will boil down as to whether or not it is worth the extra time to create specialist results for a search engine that is struggling away a distant second. Search engine optimization is becoming more complex with each of the search engines offering more information to searchers.

Gone are the days when a simple page description in the meta tags would suffice. Search engine optimization devotees now have to write specific virtual ads for each of the search engines. Overtime they will need to be added to the regular maintenance round to ensure that each is current and displaying competitive data. As the Yahoo! blog states:

Developers can build two types of applications using SearchMonkey: Enhanced Results and Infobars. Enhanced Results replace the current standard results with a richer display. All the links in the Enhanced Results must point to the site to which the result refers. Infobars are appended below search results and can include metadata about the result, related links or content, or links for user actions (such as adding a movie to a Netflix queue).

It seems that search engine optimization is getting more complex as each day passes. Do you want enhanced results or an infobar with monkey?
