Off Page Search Engine Optimization Using On Page Basics
There is only so much that can be done with on page search engine optimization and it appears that Google at least prefers the off page effects anyway. What can you do then to enhance your off page SEO effects.
Believe it or not, its starts on page. Off page, generally speaking, refers to the number of links coming in to your site. There are several ways that other people can link to you namely:
- Direct to your home page – base url – using many anchor text that suits them including ‘click here’ or ‘found here’ or either your website name or website URL
- To a specific page – again using a wide range of anchor texts
- to an image, video or podcast – using the specific URL for that media – again using a wide variety of anchor texts
The common theme then is the variety of anchor texts. There are a number of ways you can help your search engine optimization when others link back to you:
- Ensure your website name is included in your keyword list
- Make sure the article, post and page titles include a relevant keyword
- Provide a visible list of tags – experiences visitors will normally try to link using one of the tags – and your tags are your keywords aren’t they?
- Use bold to highlight your keyword or keyword phrase early in the content so that it stands out. You can also use it as one of the last things they see. Hopefully, because the text stands out, they will remember that word or phrase and use it
As a website owner you have a little control over what anchor texts is used to link back to your site. The best you can do is either request a change in anchor text, if you know you have been linked, or provide visual prompts to the keywords or phrases you would like used as anchors.
