Search Engine Optimization For Tradesmen

Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Sunday, 8 of June , 2008 at 7:01 am

In the past we have written search engine optimization tips for eCommerce and home business sites. Today’s post looks at tradesmen (and women) and how they can develop and optimize a page to deliver free leads.

Let’s start by picking a trade, say an electrician who is self employed. He has heard about the internet but is not to sure if it could benefit him. He feel he is the last person who could benefit from a website and search engine optimization. In fact the opposite is the truth. Having a web presence may actually make him more money over time.

You register a keyword rich domain name and build a small site based on his trade as an electrician. You include some relevant photos, perhaps some interesting schematics and of course some helpful DIY articles - remember he is an electrical so you don’t want to electrocute his potential customers - simple DIY and fault finding will do. As part of his search engine optimization program you include service area details, business name and telephone number (yes I include telephone numbers for tradesmen in the keyword list).

Add an online inquiry form that enables a potential customer to leave contact details and the site is ready to roll. Include link building in the search engine optimization program and once the site has gained a few links it will start to rank. Undertake a little social marketing with perhaps a geographically targeted PPC campaign and the traffic will start to flow.

Apart from the addition of fresh content with social marketing, the site will look after itself. Obviously the more work that is done on the site, the more links it will gain - however this is an electrician with little computer experience and a small budget. Getting the basic search engine optimization program right is the main concern to start with.

As the website starts to generate leads, search engine optimization strategies can be extended to further optimize the site. Now you have a tradesman who has an ‘internet presence’ and is receiving more leads on a regular basis - happy tradesman. Who said a web page with appropriate search engine optimization strategies is not suitable for a tradesman?

Interesting. I’m trying, with great difficulty, to promote my part time tour guide business in Berlin Germany and this has given me a few hints. I am also trying to persuade a friend who specializes in cheese and sausages at market stalls in the benefits of a website. I fancy the code you have given will prove to be useful
