Is PageRank Still Worth It?

From time to time you’ll hear someone say that PageRank is no longer worth anything. Is it true?

Before answering that question, let’s first outline some things we know about about PageRank:

  • The higher your PageRank the better your website allegedly is
  • Anyone can go from a PageRank 0 to a PageRank 3
  • Google is still reporting it
  • Your registered PageRank does not reflect what your actual PageRank is today
  • Google reports PageRank about three months after it measures the results
  • People’s PageRank still goes up every time Google updates its reports
  • Some people’s PageRank goes down because they’ve been caught selling links
  • PageRank is based, in part, on the quality and relevance of inbound links to your web pages

Looking at the above facts, it would seem that PageRank matters. So why do we keep hearing people say that it doesn’t?

As far as I’m concerned, I’ll keep looking at PageRank as long as Google reports it. While there are spammers gaming the system and manipulating PageRank, I think it still is worth paying a little attention to even if I don’t bet all of my earnings on it every time I see a site ranked.

I agree. Who hasn’t been muscled down the SERP by a larger site with high PR. That asside, Google explicitly tells us PR makes a difference and is included in the algo (source: http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html).

Ive been posting a few comments threads about this very issue! Too many people seem quick to dispel one of Google key ranking factors. Its the same as people going…”Ive got this page to rank for this keyword…and its not in the title tag! Therefore title tags dont mean anything in SEO!”
