SEO Through Blogging: The Drill Down Effect

Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Sunday, November 16, 2008

Every so often I find a comment like the one below that is so exhilarating I have to gloat. What we do here at Search Engine Optimization Journal is really nothing magical. It’s a bit scientific, but it’s also a bit artistic. We take the best of technical SEO and join it with creative writing to product high quality blog posts that get ranked for important key terms. A big thanks to the following reader for noticing:

(See the original post) WOW WOW WOW - This blog is all over the place. GREAT GREAT SEO guys. I just keep finding you guys. I’m not sure what you are doing, but it’s working.

Blog SEO encompasses several diimensions. Quite different than SEO on static website, but based on the same principles. The search engines love older domains, each blog post acts like a separate web page, and site-wide specific ranking criteria rule the day. With each blog post you have an opportunity to catch a long tail keyword, but those long tail keywords need to fall under the hubris of your general niche category. In our case, that means SEO or search engine optimization. We try to cover as many aspects of that as possible over the lifetime of the blog, but each specific blog post just covers one small aspect of the overall topic. And that’s what you should be striving for on your blog.

The key to making blog work is to use technical SEO skills for each blog post, but to allow yourself some flexibility for creative writing. It’s OK to veer from the technical SEO on individual blog posts from time to time, but if you do it on every blog post then you won’t rank well for your key terms and your blog’s overall ranking will suffer. Be flexible, be creative, but optimize your blog posts and shoot for the moon.
