Do You Need SEO In A Recession?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

When the economy turns sour just about every company starts to cut expenses and usually the first thing that goes is the one service where the perceived value is less. Search engine optimization is one of those services that could be threatened by the recession.

I would strongly caution against cutting back on your SEO for your business. Companies that I’ve seen do that have in the past regretted it. Typically what happens is they’ll see their search rankings decline. After dropping off the first page they’ll see fewer and fewer visitors to their websites and that will result in fewer conversions and less overall sales. Almost always these customers restart their optimization and they have to claw their way back up the search engine ladder to top rankings. That takes longer usually than the drop off and takes more resources long term.

It may seem that a recession is the time to cut expenses, but you don’t want to cut your marketing expenses. It’s really the time when you should be marketing more, not less. If you think of search engine optimization as a part of your overall marketing strategy then that puts it a little more into perspective. Don’t you think?

This article and its contents are very true, The first thing to always get cut in the market or business is slow is some form of advertising and most businesses think lets cut back on the Internet advertising and some or all of the SEO that has kept a constent flow of business coming in from.

What most companies that are new to the Online thing dont understand is that you are targeting a much larger crowd than just the local area you live in. All in all Internet advertising either by Pay Per Click advertising or Natural Organic Listings on all search engines will create a much Higher ROI ( Rate Of Return ) than just local advertising in the city or town you live in.

You should always keep tract where most of your business comes from and never cut back in that area, If the internet is not providing as much business compared to your local Newspaper or something like that then keep that up instead.

  • I’m in complete agreement with David and Nick. To be sure, a recession causes a lot of belt tightening across an enterprise. Expenses need to be carefully scrutinized and all fat trimmed. Our friends in the advertising business are feeling the continuing effects of the downturn. But the proverbial silver lining awaits any marketer who maintains the “front door” for their company. We’ll no doubt bump around the trough of the recession for a while before the bounce occurs. Anyone who retains a SEO budgets in the meantime will reap the greatest reward when the economy turns around because they’ll be ahead of most of their competition.

I agree with all words above. A friend of mine uses to say that when things go hard is time to conquer space.
