Does Google Friend Connect Improve Your Search Rankings?

I think Google Friend Connect kills the old argument between search engine optimization and social media. You know, the one about whether one is more powerful than the other, more necessary. SEOs have argued that SEO is like free advertising and that no one should ignore it. Social media marketers have argued that the Web, by nature, is social and therefore social media interaction is natural and normal. Both, of course, are right.

Google Friend Connect, however, may very well change the nature of that argument. Chris Lang wrote a great blog post about how Google Friend Connect increases your RSS subscriptions.

I don’t know if that’s true as I haven’t tested it, but if it is then Google Friend Connect could very well improve your search rankings. As soon as everyone else realizes this, you’ll start seeing new ways to improve search rankings and new forms of search engine marketing.

What we have yet to know is how much link juice Google is going to pass to us thru Google Reader shared items links.

I believe it is going to pass on link juice depending on how many people SHARE the item. Certainly not the power for an incoming link from a domain to a domian.

However the fact that so few are using it and the ones that are, are the most informed and bleading edge tech adopters and influencers there are. Who is the heaviest user of Reader shared items? Robert Scoble. Chris Brogan. Arrington. Enough said.

If you Google “Google Friend Connect Tutorial” you will see a guy with 20 Diggs outranking me for the term. Will he stay there, no because it is rehased material and he won’t build any links.

What is real interesting Nick is that Google is changing and moving things around in odd fashon. My latest post explains why somethings seem to be there and then gone on my blog.

@Sid Burgess, thanks for the good word. As far as navigation it is intentional. Those pages are part of the five step tutorial so I wanted to hide them just a bit. Once you know they are there links to them are fine. But I am building a list as part of this as well.
