Title Attributes: Can You Overdo It?

If you write a lot of on-page content then you probably know you can improve your keyword mojo by including title attributes in your hyperlinks. A title attribute looks like this:
a href=”this is your URL” title=”keyword phrase”
But can you have too many title attributes on a page?
I think there is a point where the search engines will look at your page as a whole and add it to the spam category if they see a bunch of keywords thrown in there for no reason. Some instances where title attributes might be mistaken for spam, or actually be spam, include:
- Using the same keyword repeatedly in the same tag (ie title=”baloney baloney baloney baloney baloney”)
- Using the same keyword phrase for every title attribute on the page
- Using a keyword phrase as a title attribute for a link that is not related to that phrase (ie a href=”URL pointing to website about biscuits” title=”automotive services for midgets”)
- Adding your laundry list of keywords to a single title attribute (ie title=”baloney, balogna, sandwich meat, oscar mayer, balogna sausage, balogna and cheese, baloney and cheese, pig in a blanket)
In essence, use the same discretion for your title attributes that you would use for your keywords meta tag and other search engine optimization elements. If it looks like spam, it probably is. Be intelligent with your title attributes.
