Is SEO Dying?

Here’s another article in the old SEO is dying debate. Like Peter Da Vanzo, I’m a little bit tired of the stale arguments that say search engine optimization is going to die. I also agree with De Vanzo that SEO will continue to change, but its death is nowhere near. Here’s a great snippet from the article:
I’ve written a lot about the importance of holistic strategy. Your aim should be to sell something to people – be it an opinion, a product, a service. All your endeavors should support this goal, and most of the time, that means doing the basics well – make your site crawlable, well linked, and solve a genuine problem for people.
I think this is the part that a lot of people miss about search engine optimization. It’s not about spamming the search engines in hopes that you get the highest ranking. The highest ranking really means nothing if you don’t sell something. You should have something to offer people that they want to buy. And you should be able to communicate with them in such a way that they want to buy. Yes, optimize your site well while doing that. But if you focus on just that second half of the equation then you will surely fail. That’s why such a small percentage of website owners are making money online. They’re doing it wrong.

the argument i heard back today is that its like an arms race, so if we join there will be no benefit because we will all be at the same level. The whole in that argument is that they are behind their competitors at the moment, so making the playing field level would be something i thought was sensible…
