Measuring Analytics Trends: What’s Really Important, And Why?
If you do business online at all then you will have to face the fact that analytics is an important part of conducting that business. Whether you rely completely on organic search results and search engine optimization, pay per click, or a combination, you'll have to measure your performance against results and that requires some form of analytics package. But what should you measure? First, before getting into specifics about what you should measure, how about a little discussion on why you should measure. In essence, you want to look at the trends. Individual numbers by themselves don't really tell the story. Numbers over time are the story. Here's what I mean: Let's say you know that you had 1,000 visitors last month of which 899 were CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Linkbaiting: When Should You Do It?
There are many ways to build links to your blog or website. You can write articles, trackback, leave comments on other blogs, submit your blog to directories, buy links (if you're brave), and engage in any of several other tactics to help you achieve this. All of those link building methods require some work on your part. But link baiting is less work. You write a blog post and everyone else does the rest. The problem is, you may not get the links you want or think you deserve. There's a risk involved. Chris Brogan recently write a blog post about the 7 types of link bait (though he attempts to give credit to someone else). Brogan also says you CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
President Obama: Cheerful Achiever Or Miserable Failure?
Googlebombs are back. It seems they never go away. And this time it's new President Barack Obama. Matt Cutts explains how Google deals with Googlebombs. I didn't realize there were separate algorithms for detecting Googlebombs and for fixing them. It makes me wonder how my algorithms Google really has. Usually, you hear of Google's algorithm - singular. But it's really the case that Google has several algorthims - plural. That's nice to know. Nevertheless, that doesn't take care of Obama. We all know about former President Bush's "miserable failure" Googlebomb. Well, that was fixed and now Obama has his own, but Google fixed that in its index. Yahoo!, however, still has Obama ranked for "miserable failure" and for "cheerful achiever". Before CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
How Many Keywords Should You Target?
When it comes to targeted search engine marketing and search engine optimization, you want to focus on the very best keywords first. That doesn't necessarily mean the keywords that receive the most search volume. It could mean long tail keywords that are perfect for your niche and that see a moderate amount of search volume per month. It is much better to get the traffic from five long term keyword phrases that see 10,000 searches per month each or less than to receive the traffic from a broad keyword phrase that sees 250,000 searches per month but where the phrase is too broad for your niche. That isn't targeted marketing. But it really depends on the focus of your website. If you have an e-commerce website CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
The Google Knol Pluses And Minuses
Does Google favor Knol pages over all other content? Matt Cutts says "No". There is a common conception that any time Google rolls out a new product that it will favor its own product at the expense of all competition within its search engine rankings. That's understandable but it isn't always true. I think it is true of products like YouTube and Blogspot. I say Blogspot because it's such a high-spam neighborhood that any other neighborhood with the same level of spam would likely get banned from Google. Nevertheless, how many Blogspot blogs rank in Google's SERPs every day? Case closed. YouTube is a little bit trickier because it is actually a very valuable and highly trafficked website. And it has so little competition chasing CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
How Google And YouTube Can Improve Your SEO
One recent bit of news from Google is that they are phasing out Google Video. Surprised? I'm not. Why else would the search engine have purchased YouTube? There is no doubt, online video will affect the future of the Web. You don't need a crystal ball to see that. And both Google and YouTube will play a part in that. Besides the obvious links from YouTube to your website for videos that you upload, there are other ways that you can use video to better your site's long term search engine optimization efforts. Even if you don't upload videos yourself. The first way to improve your search engine optimization through video is to include a video sitemap that is separate from the HTML and CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Why Wikipedia Is Kicking Britannica’s Ass
Jason Lee Miller knocked my socks off with this article on Encyclopedia Brittanica's president Jorge Cauz's disrespect for Wikipedia's democratic nature. And, I must say, he's right on the money. This paragraph from the article sums it up succinctly: ”In order to compete with Wikipedia in the Google SERP, Britannica needs to build up inbound links. If content is locked up behind the paid content walls, people will be much more likely to link to other websites with free content (such as that available on Wikipedia).” Thanks Heather Hopkins of Hitwise. Cauz has a point when he says that Wikipedia's information is less reliable than Britannica's, but the problem for Britannica is that Wikipedia is free. And no one is going to link to information that CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
