Talk to ten different experts about the difference between social media and search engine optimization and you'll get ten different opinions from "social media is SEO" to "they have nothing to do with each other" and all points in between. There really isn't a best answer, but there are some wrong answers. I do no subscribe to the idea that social media and SEO are synonymous with each other. I do believe they have distinct differences, but I also believe that there is some crossover. To be sure, some social media sites (many social media sites) provide some long term benefit. Google has done a good job of leading in the general search field and has seen some moderate success in the vertical search department. But they can't do all things.
