Linking To A Segment Of YouTube Video

This isn’t directly related to search engine optimziation, but it does have some implications for video and viral marketing. You can link to a specific segment of a YouTube video within your web pages and blog articles. Were you aware of that?
It’s a real simple process. Let’s say you have a 4-hour presentation that you gave at a conference, but you just want to share one specific segment of that presentation with your web audience. If that segment falls near the 2-hour mark of the video and lasts for 20 minutes then you can link to that particular segment of the video that you upload to YouTube. All you do is a little snippet of code at the end of the YouTube video URL.
Here’s an example that shows how to link to the 3:44 mark of a 6:40 video on blog marketing.
The code you tag on to the end of the URL for the video you want to link to is #t=03m44s
The 03 is the minute designation of the video and the 44 is the second designation, so this code says to link to the 3:44 second segment of the video. It’s a great way to point to a specific part of a video that you want to highlight without forcing your viewers to watch and entire video.

Awesome Nick,
That is a great little trick.
I do want to beg to differ with you though. YouTube has everything to do with SEO. Why?
Because if you get to the top of a search term in YouTube you are going to be at the top of that search term for a Google search.
I have seen tons of videos show up but I never got to the bottom of it. Check out the term “google friend connect” in Google search.
Note the videos that are showing up. Now hit the “more” link at the top of the Google page and select YouTube. It takes you to YouTube for the same search.
You will notice that my competition is #1. He has basically leveraged his email list against getting this ranking.
I however have like over 10 videos on the subject and have gotten 8000 new visitors to my content. This reminds me of the Digg wars we fought in early 2008. Wait till I get good at this.
Can the Google whitehat Chris Lang beat the more powerful but (hate to say it) Google spammer? We shall see.
I already have, notice that I have 10 videos in the top ten of a YouTube search. I pulled that in roughly two weeks. I leveraged my Digg and social bookmarking contacts against the page views. LOL
Nick, this should open a whole new can of worms for you SEO guys. Finally I have proof that social media DOES affect Google results.
One last thought, do you want a guest blog post on YouTube for next week?
Cheers! = Chris Lang
@Chris Lang – Thanks Chris for your thoughts! As always a pleasure to hear from you! I would be more than happy to get your thoughts in the form of a guest blog post on YouTube as I am sure you will bring a different and fresh perspective

Great advice Annetta! These are all great tips for folks to opt-in as long as your content as valuable and people today see you as an expert. Also it’s a great way to start a valuable relationship. Thanks for sharing!
Is there a way to make it stop playing at a designated time as well? Like if I wanted it to start at 3:44 and end at 4:00.
