Why Technical SEO And Content Go Hand In Hand

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Some people make odd distinctions when it comes to SEO. Case in point is this: You’ll hear them say that content is king and then go on to talk about how important (or unimportant) inbound links are. But inbound links are a type of content. Links are not separate from content and so many people see them that way. Maybe that’s why they’re confused.

On site search engine optimization is a necessity. Every webmaster knows that by now. But is there any aspect of SEO that is more important than another? Is content more important than SEO? Are links?

Really, there are two aspects of on site optimization: There is technical SEO and content. Technical SEO involves those elements like titles, CSS code, internal navigation, URL structure, h1 and h2 tags, sitemaps, indexes, etc. Content, of course, consists of keywords and links.

You need effective technical implementation of changes and quality content to succeed online. They are both aspects of the same piece of puzzle. Sure, certain elements may stand out as more important than the rest. Having your keyword in the URL, for instance, is pretty important for ranking in Google. But meta tags are more important for MSN. Across the board, however, you need to try to make a well-rounded effort to optimize your website for all the search engines. That means putting equal emphasis on technical elements and good content.

What got my interest up is when you said links are content. That made sense to me because I, being a social SEO optimist I really hit on that.

With out traffic, and good traffic you do not get the comments that shows Google your content was worth commenting on. Comments are the number one content quality indicator in my mind and Google loves them too.

Without quality incoming links and NEW commenters you don’t get that indicator of others helping you build content. Getting my visitors to ask me questions in my number one trick for comments.

  • @Ron Thompson – Thanks for the comment and continuing to read!

@Tenisha Mercer – 100% correct! Many folks don’t realize the true value in excellent content…

  • Thanks again Chris for the feedback and comment :o )

  • Nick, I agree. It amazes me how many people look at the important elements in isolation. Anchor text and content go hand-in-hand. Keep up the good work!

  • @Practice Provider – Thanks for the comment and kinds words!
