How To Use Your Blog For Keyword Targeting

If you’re a blogger (and who isn’t) then you might enjoy this little trick. I’m surprised at how few bloggers actually do this. But it’s a great way to increase your keyword targeting and it works.

First, you want to make sure that you are targeting a really tight niche. Yes, you want your niche to be tight. Not too tight. But tight enough that you have enough material to write about daily and have lots of room for varying your keywords without watering down your content.

In your sidebar you want to do two things:

  • Create categories that target your keyword phrase
  • Link to specific pages on your website using your primary keyword phrase

A good example of No. 1 is this blog by Collin LaHay. Notice all the links in his sidebar with the phrase “link building” in them. It’s obvious he wants to rank for that phrase. And I’m betting that all those category links work in his favor for ranking for the phrase “link building”.

If Collin had a static website that focused on link building, he could link to the pages on his static website using his keyword phrase. This strategy works best is you use the keyword phrase that is most appropriate and relevant for the linked-to page. But if that phrase is the same or nearly same as the primary keyword phrase for the linking page then it’s best. This is one powerful strategy.
