How Long Should Your Meta Description Tag Be?
I've seen meta description tags get cut off in the SERPs. Have you? There is a reason this happens. It's because there is a limit to how much description the search engines will display in the SERP for any search result that appears. Google will display up to 160 characters in your SERP snippet. Yahoo! goes up to 165 characters. And MSN will display over 200 words. You don't want to go beyond the smallest number, 160. Keep it short. But is character limit all there is to think about in writing your meta description? No. Of course not. You also want to think about optimizing your meta description and write it in such a way as to entice searchers to click through to your website. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Google’s 100 Link Limit (Limit? What Limit?)
Does Google have a 100 link per page limit? No. Not according to Matt Cutts. In fact, Google's never really had a 100 link per page limit. As Matt says, the reason Google gave for that 100 links per page thing was because of a limitation in Google's indexing quality. That limitation no longer exists, but even if it did that's not the point anyway. Spam. That's the point. User experience. That's the second point. Link farms used to be quite popular and after awhile they quit being effective because too many users would show up on a web page, look at massive amounts of links, and leave. No clicks. No scans. No reads. Just bounces. Google figured out that users didn't want to see CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
How To Use Your Blog For Keyword Targeting
If you're a blogger (and who isn't) then you might enjoy this little trick. I'm surprised at how few bloggers actually do this. But it's a great way to increase your keyword targeting and it works. First, you want to make sure that you are targeting a really tight niche. Yes, you want your niche to be tight. Not too tight. But tight enough that you have enough material to write about daily and have lots of room for varying your keywords without watering down your content. In your sidebar you want to do two things: Create categories that target your keyword phrase Link to specific pages on your website using your primary keyword phrase A good example of No. 1 is this blog by Collin LaHay. How To Rank Better By Answering Questions Better
Chris Crum at WebProNews is suggesting that you use your FAQ page to target user queries posed as questions so that you can rank your website better. Not a bad idea, but I've got a better one. The entire conversation centers around a new trend in search. Searchers are starting to use long search phrases and expecting the search engines to know the meaning of their query rather than simply understanding the words in the search query. It's a great dream, but we're not there yet. Until semantic search - aka artificial intelligence - becomes a complete reality, we're stuck with keywords. So why not turn every page of your website into a FAQ? No, I'm not suggesting that all of your page titles should CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
CSS Or Tables: Is The Argument Over?
Ever since the turn of the millennium web designers have been arguing over CSS and tables. Tables, of course, are the old way of doing things. CSS is the new way. But if there any afforded advantage to using CSS over tables? Talk to someone like Chromatic and the answer is yes. Talk to someone like Decloak, however, and the answer is a resounding No. I'm no designer, however, so I can't speak from personal experience on every single point. I will make the observation that Chromatic's arguments seem to be focused on what is best or easiest for the designer and not for the client. There is one point he makes, though, that I will disagree with entirely. CSS is not better CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
How To Use Twitter To Build Links
It's no secret that Twitter links are nofollow. Andy Beal wrote a great blog post about how Google won't crawl those Twitter links and how that hurts all of us. But Andy's such a swell guy he offers a suggestion to both Google and Twitter: Kill the nofollow! Good idea, but until it happens we all are sitting here sucking our thumbs wishing Twitter links were dofollow. I know how you can make them dofollow. First, you have to get out of Twitter and into the rest of the blogosphere. But how do you do that? There are a number of ways, really. Any of them are legitimate, though one or two may be circumspect. Still, get those links out of Twitter and somewhere else CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Why Technical SEO And Content Go Hand In Hand
Some people make odd distinctions when it comes to SEO. Case in point is this: You'll hear them say that content is king and then go on to talk about how important (or unimportant) inbound links are. But inbound links are a type of content. Links are not separate from content and so many people see them that way. Maybe that's why they're confused. On site search engine optimization is a necessity. Every webmaster knows that by now. But is there any aspect of SEO that is more important than another? Is content more important than SEO? Are links? Really, there are two aspects of on site optimization: There is technical SEO and content. Technical SEO involves those elements like titles, CSS code, internal navigation, URL CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
