How Do You Spell SEO?
If you’re like most of us, you don’t need a college degree in English to know how to spell SEO.
Give me an S, give me an E, give me an O! You know?

But some people seem to have forgotten and they’ve taken to spelling it a different way. That’s why they use automation software to make blog comments and call that search engine optimization. They even have the nerve to charge unsuspecting webmasters too much money for this type of black hat service.
And if you’re like me, you delete those comments the moment you see them.
They look something like this:
very helpfull and interesting, thank you
or this:
You should put a few more ads on your site as you could probably make a lot of money. This is great writing.
or maybe even like this:
You have some great information and websites here. I will definitely have to come back and check this out further.
As you can see, spammers love to give empty compliments.
Here’s a funny one:
You saved me a lot of time researching for my class assignment. I am in your debt forever!
I think I’ve seen enough. Haven’t you?
Folks, this isn’t SEO. And I’ve never spelled SEO S-P-A-M. Perhaps some of us need to learn the difference!

Thank you, very informative.
Just kidding
)
I’ve seen comments like that on blogs. It never even occurred to me that those could be spam. Could you maybe explain why this is “black hat” SEO? When I think of “black hat” I think of something that could potentially get you banned from SERPs. I don’t think this will.
@ Alex – Yeah, you are correct in the true sense “black hat” is the approach that could get a site banned…so I guess you are correct, although I am thinking more about spam comments as a type of black hat technique…to generate fast in bound one way comment/links…:o)
There’s another problem with such comments; they take your effort to delete them from your comments queqe which is something silly in case you get a lot amount of this per day!
p.s. I gave you ‘S’, ‘E’ & ‘O’ so SEO
The spam comments that bother me are the ones that are very obvious spam where someone is just trying to sell their product on my blog and their comment has nothing to do with my original blog post.
@ Hicham – I agree with you, they do take a considerable amount of time!
@ Crystal – I agree with you as well, very good quality blog comments should add value to a conversation, not sell products!
It’s on about the same par as deleting spam emails, to be honest.
When somebody somewhere did a study on how much productivity and therefore money is wasted by simply getting rid of this sh*t, it really hit home to me.
This is the same annoyance as spam emails, yet this one affects a public-facing image and also takes even more effort than our junk filters and such.
CAPTCHA Nick buddy, is the only way to go at this point I reckon.
@Judd Exley – Thanks for the comment…agreed captcha is the way to go, for sure!
I’m getting so many of these spam comments lately. How do you put in a CAPTCHA? Is there a plugin? This would make a great follow-up blog post.
I’m also getting spam in my contact form – mostly car sites. Also needs a CAPTCHA.
Viagra spam links that have plagued me for months got my blog listed as an adult site on Google.
I HATE spam and spammers (though I don’t know anyone who likes them). They’ve cost me a lot of money and frustration.
Janet
Thank you for this post, I will bookmark it for reference later.
While I have your attention, I would like to discuss a very important business matter. I represent the bank of Titticaca, and have come into knowledge of a secret war criminal account containing 850,000,000,000,000 japanese lira…
Alright, enough goofin’.
Thanks for a cool post Nick!
@Janet Thaeler – Thanks for reading…I would use this as a starting point:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha
Or hire a developer to implement this on the site for you, it will be worth the money. Thanks!
Thanks Chuck…LOL!
For contact forms, use mycontactform.com and for like $30/yr you can make all the custom forms you want, with captchas, and all you do is paste the html where you want the form. Design it using their form wizard. Easy stuff.
@Chris McElroy – Thanks for the tip!
Here – Here I totally agree. One who does it all my self with no help. Been at it for a year. Slowly but surely!
