Is Google Sitelinks The New PageRank?

When Google first introduced PageRank and announced that it would be used to judge how authoritative a site is, every webmaster in the universe felt an obligation to break the code. Everyone tested, experimented, tested, and tested again to see if they could figure out how to become “authoritative” in the eyes of Google’s PageRank algorithm. When some clever search engine optimization expert met with a breakthrough he or she published it and everyone soon knew a little bit more. Eventually, PageRank was diluted because everyone figured out it was based on inbound links and the gamers and the spammers took control.

Google introduced Sitelinks and announced that only the first result of a search query would see the sitelinks. Cool. I like seeing those additional links. They give me a little bit more information about a site before I visit it and it can often be a deciding factor for me as to whether I want to visit that site or not. Now, Google is expanding its sitelinks to include more sites.

But here’s the deal:
These are just one line sitelinks. Fewer in number than the original sitelinks. That’s OK. Still a good deal. It means more sites will be able to have their pages sitelinked. But what will that do for SEO? Will Internet marketers go on a testing spree to see what they have to do to have their site sitelinked? Will this create a new kind of spam method? I’m anxious to see.

My question is how will Google pull in these Site Links? How does it know what your site is about…at lease enough to create site links…and it seems like it would be easy to fool Google as to what your site is about.

@Thomas – If I had to take an educated guess, I would say that it is based on the content and the search engine “trust factor” that a site has developed over time…thanks for reading!

I am not sure if the last comment in your posting about how sitelinks might turn into another spam method is up for debate. It appears that Google is going to offer sitelinks to every listing in the SERPs.

Very thought provoking and I am curious to see if the one-line site links will influence click behavior as much as the old format (I think the one-line format minimizes the potential). Will you be posting a follow-up to delve a little deeper?

Nick,

My understanding is that pagerank has to to with how many external sites link to yours, and that sitelinks show internal pages to your site. Would you elaberate on how the two are related to each other?

@ Joshua – Thanks for the comment…we shall see what happens in the near future…

@ Robert Brady – Thanks for the question…I think time will tell and other SEO folks will need to look at this type of information as well. As soon as I see any studies or data from a credible source on click behavior, then I will highlight this for everyone for sure!

@ Robert – This is an analogy, since Page Rank for so long was a spammers paradise and as we all know it is not a true measurement of a successful SEO campaign…it should be interesting to see how spammers try testing different sitelinks…

Nick,
I was tickled by your post and checking uncle G for explanation, here it is:
“Sitelinks are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Google generates these sitelinks periodically from your site’s contents.
Because we generate sitelinks dynamically, this list can change from time to time. Sitelinks are completely automated, and we show them only if we think they’ll be useful to the user. If your site’s structure doesn’t allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don’t think that the sitelinks are relevant to the user’s query, we won’t show them. However, we are always working to improve how we find and display sitelinks.”

To me, the key phrase is “useful to the user”. I guess it only mean one thing; Average Time on Site. The longer your user stay, the better in the eye of uncle G. What this mean for SEO campaign? of course “good and useful content”. No secret huh?

Obviously sitelinks give you an insight on which pages Google thinks the site is beneficial. It wont take long before everyone is making sites 5 pages deep only.
