Is Green SEO Going Red?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

If you are in the environmental business or have an environmentally friendly product and you want to promote your product with search engine optimization by using green terms, it’s been fairly easy to target the right terms until now. But I’ve got a feel that’s about to change.

It’s nothing the search engines are doing, although Live Search is now sponsoring a green coding contest. Rather, it all boils down to the level of competition.

There has always been an environmentally conscious group of consumers and producers, but I’ve noticed a trend in recent years and I believe under President Obama that the number of green producers will increase. That will mean more competition no matter what your niche is.

Green products are fortunate in that the category of green is so broad, it’s not really a niche unto itself. It’s a broad category of merchandise that has one particular feature and promises a benefit. But it’s not a niche, which means that no matter your service or product is within the category, you can practically define your own niche. Almost every key term under the green category is a long-tail term. As you know, we’ve been advocating long-tail SEO since the beginning of this blog. Green products offer that strategy great charms.

But with increased competition comes more challenging obstacles. Until now, if you’ve served a particular green niche then it’s been fairly easy to target the right terms for your business and expect reasonable rankings. There are some niches, like the search engine marketing world, that you have to fight and scratch and claw just to get noticed. That’s the way it will soon be for green. Are you ready to fight?

  • Oh, YEAH! I totally see that coming. I’m targeting alternative energy suppliers in my SEO consulting business and I’m hardly going to optimize for “green” anything. It will of course be included in the content where it’s naturally logical to do so, but that term is going to be so competitive soon it won’t be worth the effort to try to optimize for it.

Keep an eye on those PPC bids for the “green” industry. I’ll bet those are going to get pretty pricey pretty soon, too!

  • @Lauren Sorensen – Great point for “green” keywords for pay per click advertising, should be interesting to see that industry as a whole explode online…

In my experience as one of the top ranked Green SEO sites, I’ve been pleasantly surprised how easy many green searches have been to get for my clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and Nationwide. Of course with time this will change, and in a few years the word “Green” will be outdated, but in the meantime the world sure needs it! My impression is fewer than 95% of web developers have ever read Google’s webmaster guidelines so the world is still pretty much in the dark ages regarding SEO. Plenty of work out there!

  • @Steve Penny – Thanks for reading and your comment! I agree there is still a good amount of SEO work out there and the term “green” will be outdated in the future.
