Will The Google Trends Gadget Optimize Your Website?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Google recently announced that webmasters can put a Google Trends gadget on their website. Google Trends is one of Google’s coolest tools that allows webmasters to see what the trending searches are over time. And just in you’re wondering, the gadget is customizable so that you can show your visitors what the trending search topics are for your industry.

Why would you want to do that? Well, you might want to do if you want your visitors to know what other people are searching for related to their interest in your niche. But don’t expect it to help you with the search engine optimization efforts of your website. The information returned and output in the gadget is wrapped in an iframe and iframe’s might look cool on your site, but the problem with iframes is that the information within them exist on another website.

Here’s how they work: Information is created in Site A. Site A webmaster creates an iframe that contains the information on her site then makes that iframe available to other webmasters. You put the iframe on your site, Site B. Your site links to Site A because the iframe gadget is branded and the search engines crawl that content and give credit to Site A. Site A wins all around.

So your site doesn’t benefit from the iframe. That’s not to say an iframe can’t benefit your users. If the information is helpful then it can. But don’t count on the Google Trends gadget to help you optimize your site for important keywords. That isn’t likely to happen.
