Google’s Wonder Wheel – Do You Feel Lucky?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Google’s new features have me so excited I’m dancing with myself. And I’m really intrigued by the Wonder Wheel. Have you seen this?

Google “Search Engine Optimization” without the quotes then click on the Show Options link at the top of the SERP. At the bottom of the sidebar you’ll see a link labeled “Wonder Wheel.” Click on it. See the wonder wheel?

I’m not sure what the point is behind this little configuration, but I like it. It allows you to be more specific about your search without having to enter another search query. But if you’re a novice searcher you can find terms through this wonder wheel that you might not have thought of on your own. Now click on “meta tags”.

Interestingly, you’ll get different results each time you click on one of those wonder wheel links based on whether you are logged into personalized search or not. The curious thing to me is how Google analyzes your search query to determine what links should appear at the spoke of each wheel. Click on “meta tag generator” if you see that option. Do you now see a “joomla meta tag generator” option? I do.

After clicking on that option I see a few other spokes. This tool has the potential to take you really far off the path that you were on if you were really interested in finding specific information. But it is a cool toy to play with. I’d be interested in your thoughts as to how the wonder wheel can be used to better optimize your website. Any ideas?

I am playing with Wonder wheel for last few hours and I must say that Its really wonderful tool for getting new keyword ideas and Getting Details about keyword links…
    thanks

  • Oh yea, add those little nuggets to the keywords on your site by writing articles based on those terms. I’m assuming that they are feeding back phrases that are frequently searched. Yes?

  • Thanks Everyone for reading!

@Beth Sobiloff – I think so, I would use this tool but not rely on it for all of your keyword research, using a tool such as Keyword Discovery or Wordtracker might be a good fit for most comprehensive SEO and PPC keyword research. Hope this helps!

This is great! Well I would use it for theming and structuring a website. I would make sure I was logged out of personalized search first, Google my main keyword, and see what the spokes of the wheel are. That tells me that Google probably considers those to be sub-themes within my overall theme. I would probably want to make sure that I have a section for each of these within my site. I also use the Adwords Keyword tool for this, but this probably opens up many new possibilities! And is probably a lot faster, for drilling down on each sub-theme.

It will also tell me how well I am optimizing my site, when I see whether my site comes up in results.

  • @Anna – Very good point to log out so the personalized Google search is turned off before you use the wonder wheel…
