4 Ways A Blog Can Be Used For SEO Purposes

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Blog SEO can be a little confusing if you aren’t used to things changing real fast. Its’ a really interesting hybrid search engine marketing strategy – blogging, I’m talking about. And there’s more to it than mere SEO, but search engine optimization is a big part of it. Here are four ways that a blog can be used for SEO:

  1. Quick, Up and Down – Every blog post has the potential to achieve a ranking. Blog posts usually, however, go up quickly and come down quickly. Since search engine results are dynamic and always moving, any search result can appear in any position on any given day for different reasons. Blog posts are one reason why the search results fluctuate so much. They go up and they go down, and how many blogs are there out there?
  2. Long Term Keyword Capture – If you really focus your blog then you can set out a long-term strategy of capturing a particular keyword in the search engine results by blogging about that topic on a regular basis. That doesn’t mean you have to use the same keyword over and over and over again in every post. But freqency and focus go a long way to securing a single domain name in the search results.
  3. Fresh Daily Content On Your Static Website – If you have an existing static website that doesn’t seem to hold any rankings then you can install a blog and help give that site a boost. Your site will get crawled more often and every blog post is a unique web page that can achieve rankings on its own while giving your entire site a boost in the search engines.
  4. Link Building – Put your blog off site and promote your website with it over a period of time and you can build some solid inbound links with your blog.

Blogging can be used for more than just optimization, but SEO is a great benefit to blogging. Do it right and you can achieve multiple goals.

I wouldnt recommend having your blog on a different domain. If you pick up multiple links from the same site they are heavily discounted so after a few links any further links you add wont have any effect.

If you host the blog on your own site you get the advantage of link building directly to your number one domain from multiple sites. Static site pages such as products or categories are notoriously hard to link build to, unlike blogs which have more options (blog directories, rss aggregators, social media, social bookmarking, blog rolls etc…)
