How Hard Is It To Localize SEO For Your Website?

Local SEO, or geotargeting, for a local small business isn’t really that hard. You can do it in just a few easy steps. But there are some specific things you need to think about before you can pull it off successfully.

- No. 1, develop an About page. Contrary to popular opinion, people do look at About pages. And your About page should be about your customer’s need, the benefit she will get by doing business with you, and your local location. Don’t forget to include your address and phone number and other pertinent contact information. That’s local SEO at its best.
- A footer with local contact information. Address, phone number, and IM or Skype ID. Yes, people will contact you by IM even if you’re local. But you are optimizing your site for local traffic so include your address in the footer of every page on your site.
- Inbound links with geotargeted anchor text. You want to rank for local search terms? Geotarget your inbound links.
- Submit your website to Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, MSN/BING Maps, and Ask City. Why not? It’s local optimization.
- Advertise in the online yellow pages.
- Join Yelp and ask your customers to review your business
Local SEO isn’t hard. But it does take time. Just do it intelligently and you should be fine.

Thank you for the tips Nick. It would also help if you register your business/website to your local business directory. Some directories have links with Google Maps.

@David – Sure thing, Google Maps is great and Yahoo! Maps, MSN/BING Maps, Ask City…a few other ones that are good are Merchant Circle, Yelp and Hot Frog as well…
