Social Conversations Can Lead To SEO Opportunities
One thing that is often overlooked by search engine optimization experts when putting together a strategy for SEO is what is being talked about in social media. A lot of times, social media conversations can be a clue to what is hot right now or what might be hot tomorrow or next week (or next month). Of course, there are a few tools that can help you measure the social media conversation.

Here are a few social media related tools that I recommend:
- Twitter Trends – Twitter is hot, but it’s not just about what’s going on right now and who’s talking to whom. Twitter Trends can tell you what’s rising and what’s falling. If you see a topic rise to No. 1 fast then fall off the top 10 list the next day, it’s a passing fad. But if you see a trend linger in the top 10 for a few days then there may be something more to it. Twitter is popular and gaining in stature. Don’t ignore Twitter Trends.
- Google Trends – Good Trends isn’t social media, but it can shed light on social media conversations by letting you know what search trends are hot. Compare Google Trends with Twitter Trends and a few other tools and see what compares.
- Technorati – Technorati always sheds light on what’s being talked about, especially in the blogosphere. If a lot of bloggers are discussing it, Technorati knows and will report it.
When planning your next optimization campaign, take a look at social media trends and see who’s talking about your topic. You might be surprised and find some unique opportunities.

Nick,
Couldn’t agree more and in fact I started to trawl twitter, facebook and LinkedIn some months ago using the general ‘flavour’ of topics to hone specific campaigns and as we all know specific = conversion.
I used a different tact by scraping twitter, facebook, Bebo (for youth markets) and then running the general content through a density check of my own creation. It works really well too! Well, it work very well when it works but when it gives you the wrong info it sends you off on a tangent if your not savvy enough to work it out.

@Mick Wright – Thanks for reading and your comment! You are right on the money, the key is not to loose focus and drive off in another tangent…
I agree.. Especially following Twitter trends has been very usefull to me. I monitored twitter for about a week to find out if there was a debat goning on regarding a specific medical product. This substantiated our theory that the topic was really hot amongst patients,GPs,scientists etc. Not to mention my arguments about the importance of a social media strategy.
@ Carsten Pahlke – Thanks for reading and your comment. Good point, having a social media marketing strategy is very important and is always a great first step…
