Is Ongoing SEO Necessary?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Here’s a question that new webmasters and business owners new to search engine optimization might ask. Do you really have to continue doing search engine optimization over and over again every month, week, day?

The answer is the proverbial “it depends.” Do you want to rank for your keywords or not?

I would caution anyone against re-doing the search engine optimization on their website too many times. If you do it right the first time then your on-page search engine optimization should be fine. I would say that you need to spend some extra time and attention early on making sure your on-page search engine optimization is good. After that, it’s all off page and, yes, that should be an ongoing activity.

But what if you achieve No. 1 results for your targeted keywords?

Keep in mind that there will always be competition and they will always be working to improve their search engine optimization. If you have enough competitors who are working on their search engine optimization on an ongoing basis and you’re not then eventually you’ll be overtaken. That’s what you don’t want to happen. So if you want to rise to No. 1 and stay there, you should put out the efforts in your long term optimization strategy. It needs to be ongoing.

Nick ~ I am becoming a big fan of your work and recommendations regarding search engine optimization. I’ve had many [heated\not so heated] discussions about how much to SEO and what really needs to get done once the copy has been written. I’m with you 100% on “off page” work and that SEO is an ongoing process. Well done sir…well done.

  • I believe as competition is an on-going process that cannot be avoided, we have to continue our SEO work in a special mode:

    1) It should be done regularly. I mean it should be done on a particular time schedule.

    2) It should be done consistently. We should follow more or less a particular model. For example, the amount of links we build should be more or less the same each month and relevant.

  • One question that comes to mind though is, what about updating or simply adding to your on-page content? I was under the impression that search engines thought highly of a site that was dynamic and kept growing. That is why blogs are so seo friendly.

So in order to continue your seo, would it not be a good idea to continue adding to your on site optimization? Not necessarily changing what you have but rather adding to it? More pages, more articles, more everything?

This article makes it sound like once you have good on site optimization that you can leave it be and concentrate on off site stuff.

Is that what you meant or am I misreading it here? Thanks for the clarification.

  • Hi Alton J. – Thanks for your kind words and the support! :)

Hi Website Promotion Guy – Scheduling and consistency is very important with off site optimization/link building…thanks for the comment!

Hi Lorraine – Thanks for the question. I think you are reading a little too much into this. If the additional content will help the goals of your business, your website visitors and contribute overall, then I say add the additional content. I do not recommend adding content for the sake of adding content without a clear goal for it…anyway thanks again for being a loyal reader! :)
