I agree that Google and Bing/Yahoo are about to engage in a serious turf battle, but I’m not quite sure what (if any) effect it will have on regulating the industry.

In free market systems, less competition traditionally equals more regulation and more competition traditionally equals less regulation. Consequently, I think the competition will enable the industry to better regulate itself. However, we’ll have to see if the search industry plays out this way since there will only be 2 “real” players.

I don’t think SEO is getting any harder but it’s certainly becoming much more competitive. I do agree though that we’ve arrived at a head-to-head meeting between Google and Microsoft.

I think SEO is getting more extensive specially when it comes to off-page optimization and increasing link popularity. SEO experts recommend various online marketing media that end up in an increase in search engine placement and increase in search engine rankings.

Search engines index tweets, give credit to “nofollow” links, etc. All of these points indicate the importance of social media and expansion of SEO results to other methods such as social media marketing.
