Search Engine Specialization – Are We There Yet?

Marketing Pilgrim reports that Bing is still increasing its popularity. The interesting part here is that Bing is seeing success in specific industries:

  • Travel
  • Shopping
  • Finance

Who knows how they chose these industries to target, but if we start to see that one of the search engines is dominant in particular industries while lagging in others, will we then see other search engines follow suit and target industries that aren’t represented? Will one search engine specialize in real estate information while another specializes in arts and entertainment?

I think this is a good, actually. Then it won’t be a matter of who has the greatest market share overall, but who can capture a percentage of market share for each niche. One search engine may do extremely well in a particular niche while another search engine does well in another. Then you’ll see competition between smaller search engines for those niches rather than start-ups always trying to tackle the king of the mountain.

What do you think? Are we headed toward more specialization in search technology?
