Yahoo! Gains 11% Over Google’s Loss In Search Share
Mashable reports: while Google grew from June to July, it still lost market share to its competitors – from 66.1% in June to 64.8% in July, a 1.3 percentage point drop. And who was the culprit that stole Google's market share? Was it the fancy new Bing? No. Yahoo! The most unlikely of candidates. This is an interesting story and a bit irrational. What has caused the huge swing in Yahoo!s (the non-search engine) search function? Could it have been all the publicity it received in its handing its search engine over to Microsoft? From Microsoft's perspective, it doesn't matter if Bing or Yahoo! steals market share from Google. Microsoft wins either way. But it's interesting to note that while searches went up all around, only Yahoo! CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Compare Google Caffeine – See For Yourself
A few days ago we took a look at Google Caffeine and made a few notes. At that time I didn't know about another site that allows you to make side by side comparisons of individual searches. This is a cool tool. Comparecaffeine.com allows you to compare current Google search results with Google Caffeine search results. You can do this in American, Dutch, Irish, or UK versions of Google. What I like about Comparecaffeine.com is you can perform a search result and see where specific web pages fall within the rankings and judge, based on side by side comparisons, how Google Caffeine is different than current Google SERPs. When you arrive at the site you'll see the following search CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Do Short URLs Send Link Juice?
If you've been wondering whether or not to use short URLs, there are some advantages and some disadvantages. From a link building point of view, short URLs send link juice, but not to the destination URL. Rather, they send link juice back to the redirection service, the URL shortener. Here's what happens when someone clicks on a short URL: They first go to the short URLs website (this is very brief as you'll see in a moment) Then they are redirected to the destination page, the page represented by the URL the shortened URL represents Because traffic is first diverted to the short URL service, and link value along with it, you are adding link juice to the link vault of the URL shortening service rather than the website CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Will Search And Social Meld?
With Google experimenting with real-time search and Caffeine-like results along with the pre-release of products like Google Wave, will we see a new move toward the melding of the social and search web? I think there are a lot of people who would like to see that happen. It seems, at times, that Google's greatest competition is coming from the social web a la Twitter and Facebook. If that is the case then Google's fight-back measures could be to enter the social turf. They already have. Google Connect is in direct competition with Facebook Friend Connect. Google Wave promises to knock Twitter off its pedestal. And Google is just chomping at the bit to get more real with real-time search and is testing the waters with Caffeine. Password Protected Pages and On Site SEO
This may seem like a no-brainer to some of you, but people do ask. If you are planning to include password-protected pages on your website, pages that users cannot access unless they are privileged and know the secret password, then you need not worry about the on site search engine optimization those pages. Pages that are password protected won't be crawled or indexed by the search engines because search robots can't fill out the password data to get in. But there are a few things that you do need to consider when creating password-protected pages. First, to create the password protected pages you need two things: an .htaccess file and an .htpasswd file. Your .htpasswd file needs to be located outside of your websites main root on the CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Should You Use Free Web Templates?
Free website templates are a little bit controversial. A lot of people like them. Some designers will tell you that you're better off with a premium template designed just for you. I won't argue. But you could just as well build an HTML website from scratch. Nevertheless, there are advantages to using a free HTML template. One disadvantage is that free templates require a link back to the designer. This is a customary practice and since you aren't paying hard money for your template you might as well oblige the link back. But that's a small price to pay for the benefits. With a free HTML template you don't have to build your site from scratch. The shell is there for you. All you have to do CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
