Will 2010 Be The Year Of Video Marketing?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis ShareThis

In 1999, everyone was excited about article marketing. In 2000 and 2001 everyone was curious about search engine optimziation. In 2003, it was blogging. 2008-09, Twitter (social media). Next year I think it will be video marketing.

It’s not hard to see the trend. Video marketing is starting to pick up speed. YouTube is the second largest search engine on the planet. Some people sit and watch YouTube all day like the rest of us watch Twitter and Facebook.

Flash has been around a long time, but the early incarnations of video technology were ahead of their time. Most people didn’t have the bandwidth to sit and watch a video, let alone use video over and over again to market themselves. But today that is a different story. And next year it will be even more different.

Video is powerful because it allows a full-body context. In other words, site visitors get to see your body language, which can’t happen with audio or text. Text is simply one dimensional. All you have are words and punctuation. Audio adds the element of voice and tonality. But video takes online communication to the next level and allows online marketers a new way to earn trust – a powerful way. Because of its huge potential in building trust among site visitors, video marketing will be the next wave in online marketing.

Nick, To say text is just words and punctuation is an over-simplification of the art and craft of good writing. Poor video can be as useless as poor copy. I agree with you that trends are transient or cyclical and moving pictures with sound is very user friendly. But it’s only a medium. Content and context expressed with cut-thru and empathy is key. What will be interesting, in the UK at least, is how brand custodians use their new freedom to ‘place product’ in TV programming. Also, UK government plans to increase user-tax for broadband width could impact on the extent of your video prediction.

  • Hi Bob – Thanks for reading! I agree with you that it is a great medium but it does still come down to great user focused content and video content. Very interesting about the UK government plans to increase tax for broadband width…it is only a matter of time before this happens in the US…

  • I believe it. NextMark added a feature to it’s data card publishing tool that allows list managers to post videos from YouTube.

  • Hi Chris – Thanks for the update about your NextMark product…:)

  • Hey Nick,
Being a lifelong video producer and dare we say obsessive online video enthusiast, I agree with you about the increasing power of video. I read a prediction the other day saying by 2030, 90% of the content on the web will be video.
Having said that, I must say I am also a big fan of the written word, so have some agreement with commenter #1, Bob Ashwood. Problem with that is, no matter how eloquent and persuasive the text, most people prefer watching rather than reading. I think that is sad but it is true.
Your video was very good for online marketing purposes, short, sweet and to the point. Perhaps you should be seen in it though. I know….I hate being on camera too. But I just suck it up and pile on the hairspray. :)
Have you heard about video interactivity? Video interactivity is an incredible way to add lots of versatility to your video. It is my new favorite thing. For example, in the video above, you could have a link inside the video to take visitors to a sales page for one of your seminars. Then, you could update that link anytime without having to change the video itself or re-upload it.
If you ever need any video production advice, please drop me a line. You have been so kind in answering all my questions I will certainly do the same for you. Think about adding the interactivity. Research shows click through rates range from an average of 24% to a high of 63%. That’s pretty dang incredible.

I agree 100%…. remember “will It Bleand” folks need to think way outside the box to get their videos to go viral. The market is already flooded with video and if these predictions are correct, producers both large and small will need to REALLY set themselves apart from the crowd.

Want to see it actually happen? A real live success story? I launched guttercleaningsecret.com one week ago. Already have online sales coming in but the goal is to drive millions to the site with a “viral” video series. Stay tuned and email me & I will share the results…. Stay tuned for “Will It Blow?”. I think it will be another YouTube hit!

Think Cottage Cheese, Jello, Golf Balls, Dead Squirrells (not of my own doing), beer cans, corks, barbie dolls…

You never know what your kids may throw in your gutters and cost you thousands of dollars in mold remediation or a flooded basement!
