If you want to earn on you ads, place it on the right place, that it cannot disturb you visitors.(i.e at the end of your article) so that the visitors will think to click on your ads, because they finished reading.. I've also discovered that sort of weird backwards effect with adsense sites that you touched on. If the site is great, people want to read it and not click the ads (and therefore the site is a failure even though its a great site!). If the site sucks, people click the ads, which is what you want. So when building a site to capitalize on adsense, the seemingly backwards rule is to build a crappy site! Weird but true...
