Is The Semantic Web Just Around The Corner?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Google has made it very well known that it plans to take over the Web. Sidewiki is just another example of how ubiquitous the search giant is trying to be. Another example is the race to semantic language indexing. Google isn't the only search engine trying to move the Web away from forced search engine optimization and toward natural language. Personally, I'd like to see a natural language Web. It would be a big improvement. Spammers would all but disappear and people could actually find what they are looking for just by typing in a query. Right? Maybe. One of the cool things about the structure of the Web today is that searchers can find what they are looking for just by querying a search engine CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

What are Blog Trackbacks and They Good?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

I fielded a question from a client about his WordPress blog. He wanted to know what a trackback is and whether or not it was beneficial for his search engine optimization efforts and if he should approve them. Here's the lowdown trackbacks. A trackback is a type of comment that appears on one blog as a result of a blog post on another blog. Blogger A writes a blog post. Blogger B responds on his own blog and "trackbacks" to Blogger A. When Blogger A logs into his WordPress blog and looks at his comments he will see Blogger B's trackback comment. He then has a choice to either approve it or not. If he approves the comment then the trackback will appear in the comments CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

The New Face Of Blog Comment Spam

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

While approving comments for a WordPress blog I came across some comments that were clearly spam, but that were not so easily identified as spam at first glance. These comments almost snookered me, a seasoned WordPress user and comment analyzer, so I thought it might be a good idea to issue a warning. If you are a blogger, check your comments carefully. The comments in question appeared to be harmless. They were carefully crafted comments that specifically addressed the posts on which they were made. They were completely indistinguishable from bona fide comments - the kind of blog comments I like to get. They were customized just for a specific blog post, unlike most spam which is bot generated and generic. The problem with these comments, however, CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Are Your PDFs Optimized?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Bob Dylan iconically sang "The Times They Are A'Changing." It wasn't just a message for the 1960s. It also applies to search engine optimization today. The search engines are constantly updating how they index and rank web pages. One of the latest developments is the ability to crawl PDF files. That means, for webmasters, that you have an opportunity to optimize your PDFs for search. That does come with some qualifiers, however. The PDF can't be in a secured folder on your server. It must be accessible publicly by humans and by search engines. But you optimize a PDF just like you would an HTML page, minus the code. What I mean is you optimize the PDF text with keywords and the most important places for CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Good SEO Is Reputation Management

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

I was asked the question, "Should I spend more time on SEO or reputation management? My response: Good SEO is reputation management. Think about what the latter is. It's using search engines, social media, and other online marketing tools to maintain a positive image of yourself and your business. If you do it right, you'll build reputation management into everything you do. Search engine optimization included. You can't keep thinking either/or when you live in a both/and world. You will eventually come across a former employee or customer who had a bad enough experience that they want to tell the world about it. If you SEO your website and blog properly then you'll make it more difficult for them to gain a foothold with your name. But CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Is Link Cloaking Immoral?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Whenever you read about link cloaking you almost always hear it in a negative sense. There is a negative connotation to the conversation as if it should be a given that it is immoral and unethical. And some people might even add that it should be illegal. But that's not necessarily the case. Link cloaking is nothing more than obscuring the destination URL of your links so that readers don't see where the final destination is. Why would a webmaster want to do that? The best reason I can think of to cloak your links is to protect your affiliate IDs. Many affiliate marketers use link cloaking to protect their affiliate IDs and to increase their click throughs. It's a viable tactic. Remember, if you are an affiliate CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
