Are You Serious About SEO – Yet?
Many small businesses go online to take advantage of Internet marketing tactics to “try it out” and see if it works. News: It works. But it doesn’t work if you’re just trying it out. You have to make it work. And that requires a level of seriousness, just like it does for the rest of your business.

I don’t mean to be blunt, but here’s the deal. Imagine your local fire department showing up at a house fire with their fire trucks, ladders, and hoses to “see if it works”. How long do you think they need to keep their hoses on the fire before they decide it’s working? Five minutes? A half hour? Three hours, maybe? I’m not a firefighter, but I’m realistic enough to know that every fire is different. Some fires can be put out in 30 minutes. Some blazing infernos might take all day. So how long should your fire department remain on the scene before they decide that firefighting works? I know this is a dramatic analogy, but I wanted to make a point
Search engine optimization isn’t anything like fighting fires. But it does require a commitment, and is much different that other forms of marketing and advertising. How long will you go through the motions before you decide it isn’t working for you?
My suggestion is this: Learn everything you can about SEO and Internet marketing before you start. There are many places to learn, directly from the search engines, professional SEO courses or free blogs and resources (like this SEO blog!) Don’t go into it to see if it works. Other people have already tested it for you. It’s worked for some of them and it hasn’t worked for others. The people it has worked for all have one thing in common – they were committed to making it work. If you want your search engine optimization to work for your business long term, then you’ve got to be committed to its principles. Are you?

I agree with you that SEO is a long term process as long as the business still there SEO still exist for the reason that how you promote your site in terms of Online marketing without an SEO and the possible answer is TV,Radio,Newspaper Advertisement.Everyone now is using computer rather than listening radio, watching TV and reading newspaper.
Hi Andre,
Thanks for reading and stopping by…it is very true SEO is a truly long term and ongoing type of medium.
Nick…you make a GREAT point! In today’s “I gotta have it now” world many website owners give up on SEO when they don’t see immediate results.
People need to remember that SEO is like eating: you have to do it constantly or you (or your website) will wither away to nothing.
Hi MasterLinker,
Thanks for the comment and great SEO/eating analogy, it is VERY true!

Nick,
Great analogy about firefighting.
What is left unsaid… many businesses are “smoldering” from the inside out due to lack of marketing or clinging to traditional advertising that simply isn’t delivering. Before long, many of these embers will burst into flames and destroy the business.
The biggest problem many businesses have today isn’t the economy… it’s lack of innovation, lack of marketing, and failure to realize they are in the media business
A true story: One of the resident from my neighbourhood got stroke and was partially paralysed. During one of my morning walk I bumped unto him and noticed he was struggling to walk using crutches. A few months later, he could walk ‘limbing’ without crutches. More than a year now, he could walk quite normally with a little bit of noticeable ‘limbing’. I would say he has done it. Good job. All I can say is, patience, consistency and determination is the essentials to success so as SEO methodology.
Hi Nick
Commitment is certainly what it takes. Since starting on the SEO route myslef, encouraged by sites such as yours that have given so much useful information, I have found that SEO is now a part of my every day. Slowly I see the added benefits each week
I just getting started with a revised website and learning SEO. I am the kind of guy that just wants to “do it once and be done with it,” so it good to have a reminder that this needs to be an ongoing effort for my divorce mediaiton practice. Thanks.

Great comment and key point about issues with businesses today, every business indeed in the media business
Hi jimisan,
Thanks for reading and sharing your story!
Hi Doug,
Glad my article has helped you! Thanks for reading and your comment.
I tried it out to find out if it works. When it worked for me, SEO became my main line of business. Now, I do it for other sites as well.
So, as you can see, I’m very much serious about it, not only because it worked for me, but also as I’ve noticed that it’s become the standard of the web development.
Today a website without considering SEO means a shot int the dark toward a target never seen!
Hi Website Promotion Blog,
Very true about shooting in the dark!
