Something I've noticed when it comes to link building is the relevancy of places where one creates backlinks. Directories definitely step into and black and white ground... you either go fairly or you see the black hat come out. Countless of times I've been faced with "directory" offers that end up being link farms, which are definitely a no no.

Regardless thank you for this article, I hope we can share ideas on the industry at some point.

Thanks Nick!

Hi Sunny,
Thanks for reading and I am happy to give you some advice regarding online directories.

I personally only recommend submitting a website (new or old) to some of the top directories that might generate targeted visitors to your website, such as: Yahoo! Directory, DMOZ, BOTW, Business.com, Joe Ant, etc. Link building should be balanced with many different relevant sources of links over a period of time. Think of link building as marketing your website and business online and the SEO benefits will come over time.

I hope this helps...

Hi Nick,
I was told that link building is the most important for seo from the first day I started seo. Several days ago, I came across an article which said the standards for judging a directory are PR, number of sites listed, number of backlinks it has, and age of the directory. But now I'm reading another article which tell us to submit websites to new directories. I'm so confused! Can you give me any suggestion?

Good points!

I would also add link building to the top of the list as this is extremely important in getting traffic to your site (which is the ultimate goal of SEO) either via higher rankings in search results or directly from the links themselves.

Good advice Nick. It took a long time for me to learn the hard way that having keywords in the metatags that are not found sufficiently repeated in the actual content will not bring results. We appreciate your nuggets so willingly shared.
