Of course Google says that. What else can they say? Why would Google want to encourage you to get something for free when they want would rather you pay Google?
There is a huge conflict of interest in Google's business model, that nobody wants to talk about. But the fact is I want to hire an SEO company for one reason, and one reason only, to get me above the fold on Google's first page in the organic rankings. Any other reason an SEO company gives is hogwash when it comes to how good your site is for your customer!
So, I do want someone to say to me, "I can get you above the fold, on these particular keywords, and here is how I am going to do it. And this is the range it will cost you, And if I can not get you there, you don't pay me". Now that's an SEO partner. The reason the industry has such a shady reputation is exactly due to the attitude that payment is not results dependent. And don't give me that lawyer or plumber analogy. I pay a lawyer for representation, I pay an SEO for rankings, period. I have a large furniture website, and I'm looking for a long term partner on those terms, anyone interested? I have paid Google millions of dollars since our inception, and now we need to augment that PPC strategy.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for reading and for sharing your thoughts!

I agree it does come down to how much you want that Google ranking, but lets not forget that rankings don't build or generate sales or leads. If a website is not built properly or a product is not strong, sales won't happen regardless of how well a page of a website is positioned.

I hate it when my customers are approached by dodgey SEO gurus with bad practices. They charge a fortune and deliver no results.

It's also annoying when people are led to believe that an hour of SEO work with make them number 1 for all their chosen keywords.

It takes a plan and hardwork to get to the top. How much you want that position will depend on how much you will work for it.

I also agree with both of you that ffa doesn't help a site in anyway because google doesn't consider them as links. However google won't banned a website for using them according to what I read from google webmaster. The only links that google counts are the ones related to the websites. Directories are good because they have many categories and they have high rankings
