Get Too Aggressive with Your Online Marketing and it Could Hurt!

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Being an online marketer requires being somewhat aggressive but what happens when you are too aggressive? One thing you do not want to happen is anger your industry leaders if you are just starting out in the search space because you could find yourself on the losing end of a battle. Being proactive and aggressive with your marketing is perfectly normal but make sure you don’t cross the line otherwise you might have to start over.

What can happen to me if I get over aggressive with my online marketing?

Search Engine Penalties
If you are just getting started with your online marketing and you really don’t understand the ropes you could find yourself building links the wrong way that could eventually lead to negative repercussions with your website. Search engines do give out website penalties for business who abuse the marketing process even if you do it by accident.

Audience Turn Off

You could also find yourself dealing with an angry mob. Your audience could very well frown upon your approach if you push the boundaries too much. If you have an audience that does not respond well to an aggressive marketer you might find yourself in the hot seat and possibly with a reputation management issue if others start blogging about you, your company or your approach.

Over Saturation

Yes, you could water down your brand so much that people just don’t want to hear about it anymore. Most don’t have to worry too much about this but it does happen if you are in a very small niche with little amount of competition. If you have a very small niche online you could just over pounce on the opportunities available if you are too aggressive.

You have to take the time to understand your audience and what they want to see from you online. You also have to know when you are pushing the boundaries a bit too much so you keep your online image safe. All of this comes with time and understanding the landscape completely.

Audience turnoff’s a big peril, but if you focus on creating useful, outstanding marketing content, you should be fine on all three fronts.

Seems like a penalty push occured late last week based on what Matt Cutts said, and people who’ve used shady tactics will be dropping. Crazy how so many people rely on Google traffic solely to float their business when all they have to do is change a setting and everything changes.

Lesson to everyone that a strong marketing plan is much more than positioning, it should include all forms of advertising and always maintain a white hat flavor.

Thanks FS for reading! I heard the same thing about a Google penalty push as well on several news sources…

The moral of the story is indeed never put all of your eggs in 1 basket and building different streams of marketing/revenue is essential in today’s marketplace…

    Thanks again!

As Andy said, good quality articles will infact stand the test of time. Too many spinning and such like I’d happening. If someone wants to build a reputable business and establish themselves as professionals- the least that they can do is to educate themselves and produce content that will benefit others. This takes time and commitment of course, like every other legitimate achievement.

I believe that the antispam algorithms are well overdue to lift up a standard against these content farms a

….and as long as businesses know that they should keep aware from these dodgy actions! They really don’t have to freak out too much.

This is a fantastic article. The search engine people when there was a emergency situation occured. Were absoluteley incredible and we could not beleive what they did to help. Even though we are a tiny business the search engine people made it so easy for people all over the world to find us. We are so gratefull for your article. We thought it was something we had done wrong. What it was that people started to copy what we did which put us in a situation where we had to work twice as hard to climb back ontop for the listings.
