It seems to me that the easiest way of expressing where SEO is going will be to tell people focus on SEO copywriting.

On the SEO side, focus on keywords and semantic aspects of it. On the copywriting side, learn how to put together a marketing approach together with a converting tone aiming at your readers.

At least, the major part of the seemingly technical issue is resolved for them this way!

Nick, the conclusions of Matt McGee are more than true. The main problem for the big guys is that hey still thing "bricks and mortar" way and so do their marketing departments.
Their understanding as well as the understanding of many other business, freelancers and professionals is that actually SEO is a too technical. But they are completely wrong. SEO is a new marketing technique that has as much technical issues as much has a TV promo with the technical issues of the TV broadcast.
Big guys only show how far are they from the perceptions of their customers. They still pour money in in-effective old fashioned campaigns instead of investing in creative and more effective ways to reach their potential customers. For them to think over a strategy to present organically in the web is something too foggy with no understanding at all. Which makes me happy by the way because imaging big players investing properly the budgets dedicated for paid campaigns ?!
