5 Important Blog Marketing Tips
It is important to understand that a blog is just another website and requires some sort of activities and efforts to really fuel the fire and get some traffic moving into the blog posts. Depending on what platform you use for blogging there are many ways to be able to get some newly found traffic heading over to your blog over time.

Plugins: Depending on which blogging platform you use there are many different plugins you could be using to strengthen the SEO qualities of your blog. If you are using WordPress there are about 10-15 must have WordPress plugins for helping your blogs search engine optimization efforts. A great place to locate the best WordPress approved plugins would be directly on the WordPress website at the following link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/
Content: Make sure to have some substantial content on each blog post. This could be difficult if you have a very image driven business but try your best. Typically around 300-350 words is an ideal amount of text for a blog post. More is fine as well and if all you can do is 100 words than it is certainly better than nothing. If you have to use only images then make sure your image alt tags are optimized for search as much as possible.
URL Structure: By default your blog posts link structure are usually a string of symbols or numbers identifying the page as an ID. You can change this by getting into the settings of your blog and having the titles pull in as the link structure rather than the page ID numbers. If you often use some keywords naturally in your URL structure this will help you greatly over time as your keywords will generate good rankings for those posts.
Categories: Try not to use a large amount of categories. Make your categories efficient and clean allowing them to build up nicely with blog posts. You don’t want 20 or 30 categories when many of them could be easily consolidated. This will drive more power to your category pages that have a decent amount of blog posts.
External Marketing: Take your blog posts and push them through Twitter, Facebook, social bookmarking, LinkedIn and any other niche business website you are allowed to submit links. You will see your traffic numbers increase drastically over time.
SEO for blogs is no different than search engine optimization for websites. You have to drive some power to your blog in order for it to work how it is supposed to. Approach it as a business and you will see the long term marketing benefits.

You should mention some of the WordPress plugins that you use to help with SEO on your blogs such as All In 1 SEO or the Platinum SEO plugin or maybe you use another one. I’d be interested in hearing what one you like better and why. Besides all the tips you gave above I think that the post titles are the most important aspect that would help you rank for certain keywords.
Hi Bruce,
Thanks for reading and your comment!
There are many great WordPress plugins for SEO, I prefer the All in 1 SEO pack but have not tested the other ones. I actually wrote a recent article in Website Magazine (print issue) that goes through some of the other plugins I have used and recommend.
But this is a great future topic for the SEO Journal too!
Thank you very much for this small yet wonderful five tips that will drive the blog in a successful way, am a blogger and web programmer from India, i love the way write each article and its perfect that’s all i have to say this moment, keep the good work.
Thank you Once again.

Nick, I was speaking to a colleague of mine about your newsletter and blog. I recently quit reading your emails (and blog) because I felt you were only writing for the SEO or Internet Marketing novice. This isn’t a criticism, as there will always be someone new to this field, but I was hoping for some more details or research based posts occasionally.
This post is a good example of reading for someone very green to blogging, (almost something you would see on ezinearticles.com) and I know you have more to offer than this.
Hopefully I’ll see more work of yours written for the more advanced SEO crowd. If you are writing such articles, please direct me to them. Thanks for reading I hope this is taken in the spirit it was written…well meaning.

Are there any plugins for Blogger? If so, what are they? thx!
Hi Shell,
Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts and opinion.
As you know in this industry, you should not take anything personally (my skin is as thick as it gets!
Well, I value your thoughts, this blog and newsletter is not for the advanced SEO reader. There are plenty of great places out there for that information, such as: Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal and many others.
This blog is for businesses and marketing people that need SEO and SEM advice and tips that are basic to mid-level, not advanced. No offense, my goal is not to help advanced SEO people, but people that actually need help.
If you want to read some of my more advanced writing, I contribute on a regular basis to other sites, such as: Search Engine Journal, Website Magazine, Promotion World and several others.
Thanks again for reading and leaving your comment!
