I am also not a fan of paid linking. By far I prefer commenting on blogs and forums. What I would recommend is to look for good ranked blogs and forums. Not only would you get better exposure, but you will also learn from people with considerable experience and know how. Even if you are an expert, there always something new to learn.

Personally, I am not a big advocate of paid linking, the rule of thumb that I recommend is a good relevant link source could and should generate visitors to your website.

Another great post Nick…you forget to mention how useful a sneaky paid link here and there can be though. I know they are a one way link in every way except your wallet will hurt after! But, with a paid you can almost guarantee fast processing, listing and the link being follow. I have a few paid links to my site as i could get a link from a site with a page rank you can rarely get for free…i’m not saying this is something to do often but one here and there at not too much cost can boost you ranking nicely.
