Writing for Robots and er… People

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

In SEO a surprising number of people get a little too caught up in what they are doing. It is astonishing just how many SEO writers actually forget that they are writing for people. People do read SEO content and if you get too focused on the robots, then you are likely to lose out on leads. There is nothing worse than reading an article that is written entirely for robots. It is obvious and it reads terribly, it is a very quick way to turn people away from your site. While your site does have to be geared towards robots, it is possible to do so without turning away human customers. A smattering of keywords is all that is required. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

A Handy Tip to Make Content Development Simpler

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

When it comes to producing large amounts of content we know just how hard it can be. I have probably produced thousands of articles in my time about topics ranging from legal advice to swimming pool cleaning products. Over time I have developed a systematic approach to web content writing that has made the job simpler for me and I am sure can do the same for you. Link your themes - Chances are that you will be producing articles on a range of similar themes. It might be boring, but I have always found it much faster to deal with similar topics and keywords in quick succession. Jumping around keeps things fresh, but it does not make things faster. Original material, repetitive CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

How does Website Copywriting Differ from Print Copywriting

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

While website copywriting and print copywriting share a few similarities, there are just as many differences. The biggest and most obvious difference is in the writing style. Print copy is read primarily by human eyes. As such, print copy is written for people. The style tends to be active, lively and simply written. Website copywriting is different in that it needs to be written for both humans and search robots. Search robots are programs that scour the web for new pages, index their keywords and return the data to their respective search engines. In order to make website copywriting better adhere to search engine optimization guidelines, the following steps are recommended: Never refer to your product as it CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Content As Reputation Management

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Reputation management is on the rise. Few people know what it is now, but in a couple of years everyone will need it and everyone will want it. The fact is, you can start right now managing your reputation and all you have to do is what you're already doing. Online Reputation Management, or ORM, is a new science and branch of search engine optimization. The key is to improve your reputation by ensuring that you have more positive results for your name or company name online than negative comments. For most of us, that's pretty simple. Still, sometimes 1,000 to 1 is not good odds. Sometimes, a highly reputable website contains negative comments about us and we have to combat that. For instance, MySpace is one CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Which Font Should You Use?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

What kind of font should you use for your blog or website? That's a question that pops up from time to time. I've got to say that I don't give it a whole lot of thought. That's primarily because I stick to conservative fonts - ones that have been used over and over again - and don't really experiment much. But if you're the experimenting kind, be careful. It could be dangerous to experiment too much with fonts. I'm not just being melodramatic. Some fonts just plain turn people off. They'll leave your blog or website and not do business with you. It will be business lost forever. They may never come back. That's a pretty costly mistake so you want to be sure to use CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Plagiarism Site OK, But Needs Some Revision

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

John Chow has a great review of a website that checks for plagiarism over at his blog JohnChow Dot Com`. When I first read about this website I thought, "Well, why not just use Copyscape." But then I kept reading. It seems that iPlagirismCheck.com does more than just search online sources for plagiarism as Copyscape does. They also check print sources against content theft. That's good because intellectual honesty at a college or university is paramount. I highly agree with John's review as well. The website does have some navigation issues. It's color scheme is also a bit awkward. If this website expects to get any business they should do a little bit of a redesign. Not much is necessary. Your Freelance Website: Content Development And Marketing Online

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

I love this post on branding for freelancers over at Freelance Folder. According to Jon, the following items are necessary for your freelance website: * Portfolio - Resume * Services offered * Contact page * Testimonials * Call to action * A blog is optional, but highly recommended. Whether you are a freelance writer, graphic artist, website designer, coder, or ballet dancer, I agree with the list - except that blogging is becoming more and more optional. You can throw up a static website, but if you aren't updating it on a regular basis then the search engines will forget about it. That's the beauty of a CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Ways To See If Your Content Is Being Stolen

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

They call it content scraping. Thieves and pirates, or whatever you choose to call them, will take content from legitimate websites and build complete AdSense sites around them. They might make a little bit of money each month of the content, but that's not the point. The content belongs to someone else. Should you care? Yesterday, I addressed the (content theft) issue briefly and I do believe we can waste a lot of time chasing down the ne'er-do-wells. But there are ways of finding these content scrapers without wasting a lot of time. Here are a few ideas: Copyscape- Go to copyscape.com and copy your website content into the space provided. If someone is stealing your content Copyscape will let you know. Use Google Alerts to let CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Mapping Out Your Website

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

If you starting a new website there is one thing you need to think about that a lot of new webmasters don't consider until they've built a few pages. You need to think about it before you build your first page. Next to the content on the pages and the design look and feel of the site itself, this is the most important thing. It's site organization. Some of the things you need to consider regarding site organization are: How many columns you'll have on the page Which column will the main page content be displayed on Where will your navigation bar be located How will site visitors contact you How easy is it for site visitors to navigate your site (go from page to page) Will you include interactive features What can CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Blog Difficulties: Optimizing Your Blog And Creating Fresh, Relevant Content

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Optimizing a Blog is the Simple Part, Really! Simply put, optimization is the easy part because creating fresh, new, and engaging content is, by far, the more difficult task. It is amazing just how much time it takes to continually find new and interesting topics to write about. Sometimes it seems like nothing is available but if you dig deep enough in your industry using resources like Technorati or Google News you will likely find a concept that sparks a new article. First, it's not as simple as it sounds. Blog optimization must be done in several different ways at once, but blog optimization is really no different than optimizing a web page. Is Duplicate Content A Really Big Issue?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

A lot of people are worried about duplicate content. Sometimes it can seem like mass hysteria. OMG, will that paragraph I copied and pasted from my favorite website last week count against me? If I have articles floating around at 50 article directories online can I still use one for my blog? Will my websites suffer if I put the same article on two of them? You get the idea. Well, Adam Lasnik has a great post on duplicate content and I highly recommend you reading it. For those of you who don't have the time, here's a summary: Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Content Development Isn’t Easy

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

When it comes to content development, before you can get into any specifics you have to define content. It has almost become cliche, Content is King. The curious thing about cliches is that they are generally known to be true. The question is, what exactly is content? Content can be any number of things. Your body text is, of course, content. Pictures, graphics, logos, vidoes, podcasts, and other media are all considered content. Essentially, anything you put on your website, including advertising, is content. You should have a well thought out plan for your content before you start building web pages. One of the first things you'll need to consider before you start developing your website is, what specific types of content you will need. Most text-only CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
