Kill Bad Trackbacks Before They Kill You
I've often touted the benefits of trackbacking. It's a useful strategy, particularly for new blogs, for a number of reasons: You can usually garner some link juice from older, more established websites and gain valuable inbound links from relevant, high PR sites Trackbacks can be a good source of new traffic and new, loyal readers It engages conversation between professionals within the same industry Can save your butt when you borrow snippets from other blogs because a trackback is a form of attribution While trackbacks can be good, there are some dangers to receiving the trackbacks of others and bloggers who get a lot of trackbacks should be very careful about which ones they approve. I recently had to go back and delete several trackbacks and comments that I've received CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Link building strategies have come and gone. You still hear about the infamous link farm, and every now and then you'll actually see one still. But what is it and can it benefit you? Link farms are definitely bad. They really haven't been very effective since about 2001. But don't discount all link building efforts as worthless. There are still link building methods that are effective and worth using. In fact, if you aren't doing any link building at all then you are likely not increasing your search positioning. That will only lead to your competition outpacing you in the long run. But what is considered effective and legitimate link building? Link Value Factors Every SEO Should Consider
First, SEOmoz created its search ranking factors. Now, Wiep.net has created a similar list of link value factors. While no two SEOs are going to agree on everything, I think this is a useful list. It utilizes the knowledge of a good cross-section of SEOs and Internet marketers. Sure, there is disagreement, but because of the way the list is put together and the weight put on each person's opinion, you can use these link value factors in your SEO. As Wiep Knol says, "I's not rocket science - it's way cooler." Below are the top 10 most agreed upon important factors in determining a link's value: 1. Robots.txt excluded page (DF) - 4.75 2. Anchor text - 4.56 3. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Link Building Practices You’ll Want To Learn
I'm glad someone else is writing about inbound links. It isn't hard. Every now and then a small business owner will come along and ask, "What's the best source of inbound links?" Well, there are several, actually. There is no ONE source that is better than all others. There are several sources that are good. An article in SEO-News.com lists 10 of them: Blog Comments Blog Trackbacks Forums Off-site Web Pages Wikis Social Networking Social Bookmarking Organized Surfing Sites Link Begging Most of these don't need any explanation. They've been talked about enough that every webmaster should know about them by now. But there are a few here that beg an explanation. Off-Site Web Pages - Some websites now, like Squidoo and MySpace allow users to build content around a theme. You can link CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Cash for Links, it Works but be Careful
The following helpful advice was taken from Marketing Pilgrim. I think it sums up some very good advice for those of you that want to build up traffic through link buying. Link buying is a strategy that works, but is increasingly frowned upon and tends to fall into the black hat category these days. Only buy links from sites that are highly relevant to your web site content. If you sell ring tones, that link from an online florist will stick out like a sore thumb! If the site you are buying links from already has more than 5 paid links on the page, walk away. If the site labels the links as “sponsored” or “paid links” or anything CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Link Windows: Should My Links Open Up In New Windows?
Should you set your links to open in a new window or have them open in the same browser window that your visitors have open? Do you know how to do it either way? This is a question for serious webmasters. There's no right or wrong way to do it. It really depends on your goals and what you want your links to do. As a general rule, I would make all my internal links - links that take site visitors from one page to another within my website - open in the same browser. To have every link open up a new browser window is very annoying for many people so you want to do that sparingly. That doesn't mean you'll never do it. Some CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Link Selling Tip: How To Protect Your PageRank
Do you sell links on your website? Is link selling one of the primary sources of revenue for your website? That's OK. There's nothing wrong with selling links. It's not unethical or immoral. It's a perfectly legitimate business practice. But it could cause you to lose PageRank, which will cause a decline in the value of your links. Personally, I think you're better off selling links for their traffic value than you are for their PageRank value. There are so many other ways of getting PageRank than selling links to pass on your PageRank really isn't necessary. But getting targeted traffic - now that's a different story. If you have a high traffic website in a niche area then your links could be worth more than they'd CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Is Relevance Still Relevant?
If you have a network of blogs that are connected to each other by links and they don't have any obvious relationship other than the fact that they are owned by you, I'd suggest that you de-link them. As you know, Google recently updated everyone's PageRank. That's likely good news for most of you, but for some of you, especially you old-timers who are used to doing things a certain way, you might have got picked on this time. There were two ways that Google punched back at web-savvy entrepreneurs who have been, even unwittingly, gaming the system - or just making out with its downside. Google's Relevance Crusade First, Google doesn't like paid links. We all know that, right? So if you've been buying or CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
Link Buying: Is It Necessary?
A couple of days ago, several bloggers reported that Google has dropped the PageRank of some high profile websites for selling links. Today, WebProNews reported on it as well. It seems that none of the sites who lost PageRank saw any corresponding loss in traffic. This news tells me two things: PageRank and traffic are not really connected. You can have a high PageRank and low traffic or vice-versa. You can have high PageRank and high traffic or low PageRank and low traffic. One does not lead to the other, therefore, why are link prices connected to PageRank when the only real benefit you get from buying links is the traffic. I mean, seriously, PageRank is nice and all, but traffic can lead to more CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Technorati: An Essential Blogging Tool
If you have a blog you'd better claim it at Technorati. Technorati is an essential blogging tool for several reasons. First, if you have a blog your blog will be pinged to Technorati and within a couple of minutes will appear at the top of the listings. It's a great source of traffic. One of the best. Buying Links: Outside Google’s Guidelines?
Every now and then I'll hear someone say something like, "It's my website; I should be able to do anything I want with it." Usually, this kind of statement is used to support something outside of Google's guidelines, like buying links. Yes, you are right. You can do whatever you want on your website, but Google's job is to help searchers find information so they're going to implement policies that move them toward that goal. This is straight from Google's Webmaster Central: However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...
