Developing Your Site With SEO In Mind
I don’t want to knock developers because we need them. There are some things that search engine optimization experts just aren’t qualified to handle. A good developer is a huge asset to any company, large or small. But I have noticed that many developers do not give a moment’s thought to SEO. And for the most part it is due to the way they are trained.
That’s why I was intrigued by reading about a web developer who discovered the world of SEO.

I found the story to be quite riveting, actually. And it’s the perfect testimony for the importance of optimization in your website development. If you have a developer who doesn’t understand SEO or care to understand SEO then you might want to provide that developer with some training in the topic or introduce him or her to a search engine professional who can work with him. It’s important to include a well-trained SEO on your website development team. That person can be a developer with knowledge of SEO or it can be an SEO without a development background. In either case, your development team needs to have a web developer and an SEO on it. It’s essential.

Years ago when I first started SEO copywriting, working with developers was incredibly frustrating. I was told that the only way to get a website better rankings was to pay for them.
There was no convincing them that organic SEO tactics had any merit.
Fast forward a few years, and developers now have a whole new appreciation for the process. In fact, as you say, they really are an integral part of the SEO team.
I now work with several developers who “get” it – and man, life is so much easier!
Hi Louise – Thanks for reading! Yeah, years ago, it was very tough to work with many developers but now it is certainly much easier!
A few years makes a difference in the way search engines do their business. I remembered that 5-6 years ago, you would have to pay yahoo to get good ranking order.
Hi Henry – Thanks for the comment…yeah you are right, while Yahoo! still offers paid inclusion, it is very possible to do well without it!
In my experience evaluating websites built for local businesses, NONE of them go beyond design at all. There is essentially NO marketing and definitely no SEO. SEO never entered their minds until In showed up. At least this is how it is where I live. That’s OK, it gives me something to do!
Hi Lorraine,
That is great if it gives you something to do and can build some good clients for you!
Hey Nick,
Strange that I see this post because I have just finished doing the SEO for a customers site and you can tell it was a developer that did it – the same meta information for each page – no inter-site links, badly formed anchors, no image optimisation – it was a long list.
I think anyone that has a site done needs to ensure they have at least an appraisal completed to see what needs to be done!
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the comment…I have seen your exact situation many, many times!
