Don’t Forget About Typos

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

It might sound crazy but when it comes to marketing yourself online you have to consider everything that goes into it.

A search engine search field is filled with many different errors that people repeatedly will type in by accident when search for some of the largest brands in the world. I do it almost every day. Mix up characters, type in the wrong characters or completely misspell stuff. There are ways to really capitalize on this error.

Pay Per Click: Since PPC allows you to focus in a certain keyword phrase and allow you to target it specifically you can get those visitors that might be misspelling your branded keywords.

People do sometimes search like this:

Bing
wwwbing
www.bing
www.bing.com

If you are a brand that is many different misspellings occurring during the search process it will be important for you to try and go after these misspellings because you could be missing out on a great deal of traffic.

SEO: I wouldn’t recommend going after misspellings anywhere on your site as it provides a poor user experience. If you do have pages ranking even when someone searches for those misspelled keywords I wouldn’t focus on targeting them with SEO. A page with the correct spelling is worth much more than a page with misspelled words.

There could be many reasons why your branded keywords are misspelled in the search engines. If your company is comprised of two separate words or even three with the middle being a filler word like “and” or “&” people sometimes tend to really butcher things. They will sometimes just mash up all the words into one because they don’t want to hit the space bar.

Regardless you have to consider these reasons when marketing your business because you could be losing out on traffic that is legitimately looking for your business. When someone starts to look for you specifically there is a good chance they might become a customer.
